Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the downstream sector of the oil and gas, deals with visibility safety of individuals and this is as vital in terminal operations of the downstream sector as the marketing of oil in that section.
The most use PPE in terminal is the High Visibility Clothing otherwise known as High-Viz (clothings worn that has high reflective properties or colours that is easily discernible from any background). However, PPE also includes safety boots, safety helmet or hats, safety glasses and safety gloves too as well as earmuffs (in some cases).
High-Viz are clothing’s that workers can wear to improve how well other people “see” them. Most often, high viz are worn to alert drivers and other vehicle operators of a workers presence, especially in very low light and dark conditions. Where there are trucks and heavy duty equipment to improve high visibility to both the driver and the ground staff in different weather condition especially during loading at terminals. The human eyes responds to large, contrasting, bright or moving object therefore, High Viz increases your safety at work.
European standard for high visibility clothing specifies three classes of garments:
Defines the lowest visibility level e.g. high visibility trousers with two 5cm reflective bonds around each leg.
Defines an intermediary visibility level example vests. Two 5 cm bonds of reflective around body or on one 5cm bond around body and braces to the shoulders.
Defines the highest level of visibility, example Jacket with long sleeves, Jacket and trousers suit, Two 5 cm bond of reflective tape around the body, arms and braces over both shoulders.
High visibility clothing is intended to provide conspicuity of the wearer in any light condition when viewed by operators of vehicle or other mechanized equipment during daylight conditions and under illumination of headlights in the dark.
In Truck Loading Terminals, TSI (Truck Safety Inspectors) and Truck parking team also are not left out in emphasizing the importance of PPE to drivers especially wearing High Visibility clothings.
